The Arabsat 5A communication satellite, built by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, has been shipped to French Guyana in preparation for launch.

The satellite is the fourth Eurostar satellite built for the Arab Satellite Communications Organisation (Arabsat).

Internet trunking, business communications, telecommunications and television broadcasting will be provided by the new satellite, which adds capacity to the Arabsat 30.5ºE satellite.

The 4,200kg satellite will also provide VSAT and other interactive services over sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North-Africa (MENA) region and beyond for Arabsat.

Early orbit phases and the launch of Arabsat 5A, which features 26 active transponders in C band and 24 in Ku band, will be conducted from the Astrium spacecraft control centre.

The spacecraft is due for lift-off on an Ariane 5 vehicle along with another payload, a South Korean communications, oceanography and meteorology satellite (COMS).
