The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) and Alcoa are jointly exploring technology solutions for the design and development of China’s new large passenger jet, the C919.
The two firms are examining advanced aluminum structural concepts, designs and alloys to create the 190-seat aircraft, under a technology cooperation agreement.

COMAC vice president and C919 programme chief designer Wu Guanghui said that their goal is to design an efficient, high-performance structure that will compete in the global aerospace market.
“Therefore, it is imperative that we look at design alternatives and collaborate with innovative materials technology leaders like Alcoa,” he said.
The aircraft will be assembled in Shanghai, while the parts and components will be sourced globally.
The C919 is due for its maiden flight in 2014 and will enter service in 2016.
