Boeing has handed over the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-O) to Nasa for the final testing phase.
Nasa’s GOES programme comprises of geostationary and polar orbiting satellites with data dissemination capabilities that perform global weather observation, atmospheric and oceanic observations, monitors the Earth’s surface and environmental conditions.
Nasa will conduct five-months of on-orbit tests on the GOES-O, renamed as GOES-14, before it enters service for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The current in-orbit GOES constellation consists of GOES-11, GOES-12 and GOES-13.
Once accepted by NOAA, GOES-14 will join the constellation in a storage orbital position of 105 degrees west longitude.
