Air New Zealand’s black-liveried Airbus A320 aircraft will be fitted with new in-flight mobile technology to allow the passengers to use their mobile phones during the cruise stage of flights.
The Civil Aviation Authority has only approved the service on the domestic A320 aircraft, which is due to begin its first commercial flight soon.
The technology will enable the safe use of phones to make and receive phone calls, text messages and send emails, however, their use will be prohibited during take-off and landing.
The service will be provided in partnership with Vodafone New Zealand and OnAir with inflight roaming costs at 80¢ an outbound text, NZ$3.50 a minute for an outgoing call, NZ$2 a minute for an incoming call and NZ$20 a megabyte of data.
The new black aircraft will be the first aircraft in the country to allow its passengers to use their mobile phones during domestic flights.
