Virgin Blue has revealed its new Boeing 737-800 in Australian Football League livery as it takes over from Qantas as the league’s official airline.
The aircraft, embossed with the AFL logos the 17 league clubs, took off on 24 January from Adelaide, with the Adelaide Crows on board, for a pre-season training camp on the Gold Coast.
The deal between AFL and Virgin Blue, which was announced in November, has faced criticism from some club officials.
Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett said the AFL was putting money before the welfare of the athletes by choosing Virgin Blue, which does not offer expansive seating.
Virgin Blue’s 737-800 planes have 12 premium economy seats with a 34in (85cm) seat pitch, with a further eight exit-row seats with 38in-39in (99cm) seat pitch.
