GKN Aerospace will work with Airbus on the SMART fixed-wing integrated technology demonstrator (ITD) to develop concepts for the leading edge region of a natural laminar flow (NLF) wing.

The technology will create a fully laminar flow wing that has the potential to provide 3%-4% fuel savings and meet critical ACARE emissions targets.

GKN Aerospace will provide advanced mechanical, bonding, post assembly finishing and coating solutions for the leading edge of the NLF wing.

Phase one will run through 2010 and lead to installation in a ground technology demonstrator in mid 2011, while the programme as a whole will complete in 2014.
