SpiceJet is to buy 30 Q400 NextGen turboprop aircraft from Bombardier at a cost of $900m, as part of its strategy to enhance regional connectivity in India.
SpiceJet CEO Neil Mills said the strategy was to access tier II and tier III cities, which was difficult to connect with its existing fleet because of shorter runways in non-metro cities.
Mills said two different types of aircraft would help the airline to access 100 airports as opposed to the current 37 airports.
Initial deliveries will begin by the second quarter of 2011 when the airline will commence regional operations, according to Bloomberg.
The current contract includes 15 firm orders and 15 optional orders.
