The order replaces the firm order for three CRJ900 NextGen aircraft announced on 10 March 2008 as part of a purchase by SAS Scandinavian Airlines and three of its affiliate airlines, including Estonian Air.

Estonian Air president and chief executive officer Andrus Aljas said that it requires aircraft with less capacity than its mainline jets, and the aircraft will form a part of their fleet optimisation program.
