Japanese aircraft leasing giant SMBC Aviation Capital has announced an extended order of 60 A320neo Airbus aircraft which rounds its total number of Airbus orders to 340.

This order along with existing orders ensures that SMBC will have a steady aircraft supply stream till the end of the decade.

Aligning with the lessor’s sustainability goals, the A320neo saves 20% more fuel and emits 20% less CO2 than previous-generation Airbus aircraft.

Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital emphasised how sustainability elements are a key priority for customers.

Barret said: “This transaction is further testament to sustained global demand for technologically advanced, fuel-efficient aircraft, and comes amidst the continuing strong recovery in air travel worldwide”.

“With sustainability and operational efficiency remaining key priorities for our customers, we anticipate even greater demand for aircraft such as the A320neo and the A321neo in the years ahead. We look forward to strengthening our valued partnership with Airbus as we help our customers navigate these priorities.”

The A320neo aircraft according to Airbus brings “minimum change with maximum benefit”.

The aircraft comes equipped with two engine choices including the Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM geared turbofan, and CFM International’s LEAP-1A.

Christian Scherer, chief commercial officer and head of Airbus International added: “As one of the world’s leading aircraft lessors, SMBC Aviation Capital is committing to its sustainable aviation roadmap through the world’s most efficient single-aisle products.

“We very much appreciate our working relationship with SMBC and thank them sincerely for their continued confidence.”

This order adds to Airbus’ strong year of demand, which included a delivery of a total of 316 aircraft in H1 and an increase of manufacturing abilities for its A320 aircraft.
