Royal Air Maroc has taken the delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, becoming the first carrier in the Mediterranean region to operate the aircraft.

Boeing has handed over the aircraft to the airline from its delivery centre in Everett, Washington, US.

The aircraft travelled 8,867km to Royal Air Maroc’s base in Casablanca at Mohammed V International Airport.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean sales vice-president Van Rex Gallard said: "The 787 will provide Royal Air Maroc the capability to grow its long-haul network and significantly reduce operating costs, all while offering its customers an unmatched on-board experience.

"We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Royal Air Maroc as it expands its global long-haul fleet."

Royal Air Maroc’s 787 features electronically dimmable windows and larger overhead luggage bins and is said to be pressurised to a lower cabin altitude.

Royal Air Maroc operates a fleet of around 50 Boeing aircraft comprising Next-Generation 737s, 767-300s, 747-400 and 787.

In addition to operating a domestic network throughout Morocco, the airline serves more than 50 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Last week, Etihad Airways received its first 787-9 Dreamliner.
