Liebherr-Aerospace has secured a contract from Boeing Commercial Airplanes to provide folding wing-tip system components for its 777X aircraft.

Under the deal, Liebherr-Aerospace will supply the fold subsystem, the latch pin actuator and the secondary lock actuator.

Liebherr-Aerospace’s compact fold subsystem will use a motor and rotating actuator to fold the wing-tip after landing, reducing the wingspan of the wide-body 777X by 3.5m on each side to 64.8m.

The special wing-tips will be extended back into the horizontal position for take-off, which will provide an extended span to increase fuel efficiency.

Based on its expertise in flight control systems, Liebherr-Aerospace will develop the latch pin and secondary lock actuators.

The company will design, develop, manufacture and service the components Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg centre of excellence for flight control and landing gear systems in Germany.

Boeing has previously selected Aircelle, GE Aviation, BAE Systems and Nabtesco to supply various systems and components for the 777X.

Aircelle will provide titanium exhaust systems for the 777X GE9X turbofan engines, GE Aviation will supply common core avionics and electrical power systems.

BAE Systems and Nabtesco will provide remote electronic units and flight control actuation systems respectively.

Launched in 2013, the 777X is built on 777 platform, and will be available in two variants including 777-8X and the 777-9X.

Boeing is set to start production of the 777X in 2017 with plans to begin deliveries in 2020.
