Romania’s air navigation services provider, ROMATSA, will utilise radars from Spanish consulting and technology firm Indra to keep a watch on the air movements in the areas around a few of the country’s main airports.

The radar will monitor the air traffic around Henri Coanda in Bucarest, and two other international airports, Cluj-Napoca and Bacau.

Indra will set up primary and secondary radar in a station near the Bucharest airport, which will be used to reduce the separation between aircrafts to help increase its capacity.

The other two airports will be provided with secondary radars to enhance the safety levels and traffic control with the latest technology in aircraft identification (S mode).

These installations will be equipped with latest developments in traffic management by trajectory-based 4D, interoperability and conflict prediction. These technologies will help in eliminating the repetitive tasks of air traffic controllers to help them focus on tactical planning.

ROMATSA recently awarded a project to Indra that included the modernisation of the control center of the Bucharest route and four other approach centres.
