In order to complete the project on time, Bechtel and Gatwick have been working together to develop a project delivery programme over the last two years.

"A bigger Gatwick would generate the new long-haul routes and the economic boost that Britain needs."

The programme for the second runway, which is expected to receive approval this year, also includes execution and logistics plans for a midfield terminal.

Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate Said: Bechtel is a global leader with a strong track record in delivering significant infrastructure projects and we look forward to working together to deliver the UK’s next runway.

“The Gatwick expansion can happen quickly because it is simple and low risk with a dramatically lower environmental impact.

Bechtel was previously involved in the project management for Gatwick’s £2.5bn infrastructure improvement programme.

As part of the programme, Bechtel revamped Gatwick’s Pier 1 baggage and early bag store systems as well as undertook various redevelopment initiatives at the airport’s North terminal.

Additionally, the airport’s Pier 5 was revamped and a self-service bag drop zone was built with investments of £80m and £36m, respectively.

So far, Bechtel has carried out around 100 airport projects.
