Malaysia Airports and SITA have tested biometric passenger processing at the main terminal of Kuala Lumpur (KL) International Airport, Malaysia.

The partners also reached an agreement to develop new platforms to support Malaysia Airports’ digital initiatives.

SITA unveiled its whole-journey identity management solution Smart Path. The platform automates the travel journey by leveraging facial biometric ID management technology.

With Smart Path, registered passengers will just need to look at the camera, without having to present boarding passes or passports.

SITA said that Smart Path is designed to integrate into existing airport and airline infrastructure such as standard common-use systems, check-in kiosks, self-service gates and boarding.

Malaysia’s air passenger traffic is expected to rise by 4.9% this year, exceeding last year’s 2.5% growth. Last year, Malaysia Airports introduced the ‘Happy Guests, Caring Hosts’ service culture transformation programme, aimed at enhancing the customer experience.

In February, Malaysia Airports announced that it will invest MYR300m ($73.72m) to upgrade the baggage handling system (BHS) at KL International main terminal.

Last October, SITA signed an agreement with Malaysia Airports to install a further 15 Scan&Fly self-bag drop units at KL International Terminal 2.
