Fraport to divest entire 30% stake in Hanover Airport for €109.2m

Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide reached an agreement to divest its entire 30% stake in Flughafen Hannover-Langenhagen (FHLG) to iCON Flughafen, in a transaction valued at approximately €109.2m.

FHLG is the operating company of Hanover Airport (HAJ) in northern Germany.

Fraport acquired shares in FHLG in two portions. At the outset, the company purchased 20% stake in 1998, followed by another 10% in 2003.


GACA and SITA partner to modernise airports across Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) partnered with IT solutions provider SITA to support the modernisation of 26 airports across the country.

The collaboration marked another major milestone in the partnership between the GACA and SITA.

As part of the technology upgrade, SITA is deploying its AirportConnect Open platform, which can be leveraged by airlines to work seamlessly at airports using common facilities. It also offers a self-service experience from check-in to boarding.

New service allows passengers to skip security and immigration queues

Germany-based chauffeur provider Blacklane released the Blacklane PASS airport service to allow passengers to skip security and immigration queues.

The pass intends to better utilise passengers’ travel time without the need for annual membership clubs or frequent flyer status.

The Blacklane PASS will allow travellers to skip security and immigration queues for $100 and access private lounges for $50 in more than 500 airports worldwide.


Dublin Airport launches new transfer facility for connecting flights

A new transfer facility was launched at Dublin Airport to enable it to transfer traffic between Europe and North America.

Constructed with an investment of €16m, the new facility provides additional capacity to manage four times the number of passengers currently being handled.

The new area is located next to Pier 4, close to Terminal 2. It is part of Dublin Airport’s €100m investment programme for 2018 and is expected to enhance the experience of transferring passengers.


Delta and Incheon Airport to create new hub in Northeast Asia

American passenger carrier Delta Air Lines partnered with Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) to create a new hub in Northeast Asia.

The parties will exchange information regarding the design of Terminal 2 at the Incheon International Airport (ICN).

Furthermore, they will co-operate on initiatives to improve the customer experience and operational performance. They will also explore the use of new technologies and collectively market and promote the ICN hub.


Flintco wins $122.58m Memphis Airport modernisation contract

US-based commercial construction company Flintco secured a $122.58m modernisation contract for the construction and redesign of Memphis International Airport’s (MEM) B Concourse.

Flintco was selected for the project by the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA) board of commissioners.

As part of the modernisation project, the board also awarded another $32m contract to Aero Bridgeworks for the construction of new jet bridges.


Study finds 68% of UK passengers prefer use of AI by airports

Younger travellers prefer use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology by airports to enhance their experience, revealed an online YouGov poll commissioned by inflight entertainment and passenger engagement company Spafax.

The survey, which involved nearly 2,110 respondents, asked about their wish list for an airport lounge of the future.

37% of the respondents aged 18 to 34 said that they would play augmented reality (AR) board games with other passengers. However, just 9% aged 55 and more like so.


VINCI finalises acquisition of Airports Worldwide portfolio

French airports operator Vinci Airports secured regulatory clearance to acquire eight airports in the US, UK, Costa Rica and Sweden from US-based company Airports Worldwide.

In order to execute the deal, VINCI Airports, a VINCI Concessions subsidiary, secured official approvals from the competent regulatory authorities in the US, UK and Costa Rica.

The acquired portfolio includes two concessions, two freehold airports, four management contracts, as well as three partial-management contracts in Costa Rica, the UK and the US.


Sydney Airport unveils new 20-year development plan

Sydney Airport released its latest Preliminary Draft Master Plan 2039 (Master Plan 2039) for the period 2019 to 2039 that underlines its various growth prospects over the next 20 years.

The master plan, which seeks public feedback, was prepared in consultation with the airlines, Australian and NSW Government agencies, other members of the aviation industry, local government, the tourism industry, and the business sector.

The plan will be submitted to the Australian Government for approval after incorporating necessary changes.


US FAA to award $616.9m grants to airports

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is set to award $616.9m in infrastructure grants to airports in 45 states and four US territories.

The assistance is part of the total $3.18bn in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the US.

US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Elaine Chao said: “The department has been investing heavily in our nation’s airport infrastructure, which will strengthen economic growth and create jobs in communities across the country.”
