Mackay Airport Case Study

By Rhinophalt

Mackay Airport is located in Queensland, Australia and handles up to 900,000 passengers every year with more than 70 flights departing and arriving each week. The airport serves the cane growing hub and the major Bowen Basin coal mining sector as well as the popular Whitsundays tourist destination.

The Mackay Airport team began looking for ways to extend the life of their runway in 2016 after a pavement condition report recommended resurfacing it in 2020/21. They decided on RhinoPhalt, a product developed by ASI Solutions in the UK, after trials conducted in 2017 and 2018 showed that it could be applied during night curfew hours and was more effective than traditional Polymer Modified Emulsion (PME) treatments.
