The satellite will be based on the Space Systems/Loral 1300 satellite bus with a design life of 15 years, and will replace Eutelsat’s EUROBIRD 2 satellite, currently positioned at 25.5°E.

In addition to securing Ku-band continuity for Eutelsat and additional Ku-band resources for ictQATAR, the new satellite will also initiate Ka-band capability.

The satellite is expected to enter into service in early 2013.
