American Airlines has exercised options for an additional 35 next-generation 737-800s, Boeing announced at the UK’s Farnborough Air Show.

The new airplanes will replace the air carrier’s existing fleet of MD-80s as part of its fleet renewal plan.

The 737-800 is 35% more fuel efficient on a seat-mile basis than the MD-80s it will replace, according to Boeing.

The aircraft can fly up to 189 passengers a maximum distance of 3,115nm at a speed of Mach 0.78.
