Sikorsky Aircraft’s X2 Technology demonstrator has achieved the speed record for rotorcraft (225kt) in a one-hour test flight at the company’s development flight centre.

X2 Technology demonstrator broke the previous 216kt record for a 3,500kg class of rotorcraft, set by a Westland Lynx in the mid-1980s.

Sikorsky programme manager of advanced programmes Jim Kagdis said the X2 Technology demonstrator’s latest flight was continuing to push the speed envelope, successfully flying about 50kt faster than a traditional helicopter.

The demonstrator has an integrated suite of technologies to advance counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopters.

The X2 is designed to demonstrate that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250kt whilst retaining desirable attributes, such as improved low-speed handling.
