Ultra Electronics‘ Airport Systems business has secured a subcontract from Johnson Controls to provide a range of Airport Operations and Information Systems at Viracopos International Airport (VCP) in Campinas, Brazil.

The Kansas-based company said it will immediately start the work to deploy, integrate and commission operational systems, including common use passenger processing, baggage reconciliation, flight information displays, a resource management system and an airport operational database.

These new systems will provide airport and airline staff with accurate operational information to optimise passenger, baggage and operational data flow.

With this deployment, VCP will also enjoy reduced integration risks, as well as improved automation, utilisation and flexibility of key airport resources.

Ultra Americas business development director Jim Houghton said: "Ultra is very proud to deepen our long and successful relationship with Johnson Controls and we are most grateful for this opportunity to establish a presence in Brazil, and our systems will help the new owners of Viracopos to realise their business plans."

Viracopos director of operations and COO Marcelo Mota said that Viracopos International Airport is experiencing rapid growth and aspires to attract more international passenger traffic, in addition to its already leading cargo business.

"These new systems will provide airport and airline staff with accurate operational information to optimise passenger, baggage and operational data flow."

"Ultra’s airport operational systems will be at the heart of our airport and will accommodate the aggressive technical, financial and performance goals we have set," Mota added.

Located 99km north of São Paulo, the airport serves as the hub for Azul Brazilian Airlines, and is currently undergoing an expansion process in order to become the largest airport in South America.

As part of the expansion plan, the existing passenger terminal is being renovated and a new terminal is being established, which will result in a doubling of capacity for cargo and passenger traffic in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic games.

Ultra Electronics currently serves more than 100 airports across the globe. Its suite of offerings in airport operational systems meets the key business needs of airports, airlines and ground-handling agents.
