US-based Pratt & Whitney (P&W) has completed the assembly of a PurePower PW1100G-JM test engine, designed to power the Airbus A320neo aeroplane.

P&W will soon begin testing the engine at its facilities in Florida.

Producing 33,000lbs of thrust, this is the third variant of the PurePower PW1000G line and uses an advanced gear system for the fan, which received validation on A340 flying-testbed aircraft in Toulouse in 2008.

The gear system allows the engine’s fan to work at a variable speed when compared with the low-pressure compressor and turbine; and combined with an advanced core the engine offers fuel efficiency and environmental benefits.

Pratt & Whitney operations and engineering senior vice president Paul Adams said the company’s Geared Turbofan architecture was at the forefront of the single aisle market, with benefits such as reducing fuel burn, emissions, noise, and operating costs.

Over the next two years, the PW1100G-JM engine test programme will run eight test engines developed at P&W’s West Palm Beach and Middletown facilities.

The engines are scheduled to enter into service in October 2015.

To date, Pratt & Whitney has received 1,136 firm orders for the PW1100G-JM engines to power the Airbus A320neo aircraft.

Airbus A320neo senior vice president Klaus Roewe said the Pratt & Whitney PurePower engine was an integral part of the Airbus A320neo aircraft line.

"Commencing the test programme of the new engine is an important milestone on our common journey and we are looking forward to the test results and also to the continued integration work of the engine into the aircraft," Roewe said.

Airbus has received 1,500 firm orders from 30 clients for A320neo aeroplanes, which are scheduled to enter into service from 2015.

The A320neo airplane offers buyers a choice of two new engines: the PurePower PW1100G-JM from Pratt & Whitney and CFM International’s LEAP-1A turbofan, each equipped with completely optimised fan diameter and advanced core.
