Garmin International has unveiled the new Doppler-enabled GWX 70 weather radar for use on general aviation aircraft, providing pilots with accurate, real-time weather analysis in the cockpit.

Garmin Aviation sales and marketing vice president Carl Wolf said that compared to earlier generation magnetron-based weather radar systems, the digital GWX 70 offers significant improvements in capability, reliability and ownership costs.

"And with optional advanced features like turbulence detection, the GWX 70 will help provide a safe, comfortable ride for passengers and crew," Wolf added.

"Previously, this type of Doppler-enabled technology was only available onboard commercial aircraft and high-end business jets. The GWX 70 opens the door for aircraft of all sizes to affordably obtain the benefits of an advanced weather radar."

"GWX 70 is compatible with displays that include the GTN series touch-screen avionics, the G1000, G2000, G3000 and G5000 integrated flight decks, the G500/G600, the MX 20 and the GMX 200."

The new radar, through its enhanced range and adjustable scanning profiles and all-in-one antenna / receiver / transmitter, can be easily installed on a wide range of aircraft.

GWX 70’s altitude compensated tilt (ACT) feature automatically resets the antenna tilt with varying aircraft altitude, which reduces pilot workload while increasing focus on other tasks in the cockpit.

Garmin’s unique weather attenuated colour highlight (WATCH) feature assists in detecting the shadowing effects of storm cell activity by highlighting weakened radar signal areas.

The radar can be used for scanning terrain and visual navigation in the ground mapping mode at a horizontal scan angle of up to 120 degrees, while the vertical functionality supports analysing storm tops, gradients and cell build-up activity at various altitudes.

Optional features of the Doppler-enabled system include turbulence detection and ground clutter suppression.

According to Garmin, GWX 70 is compatible with displays that include the GTN series touch-screen avionics, the G1000, G2000, G3000 and G5000 integrated flight decks, the G500/G600, the MX 20 and the GMX 200.

The system has already been selected as standard equipment on new aircraft, including Cessna’s Citation Ten, Citation Latitude and Citation Longitude, in addition to Bombardier’s Learjet 70 and Learjet 75.
