Boeing 777-300ER airplane Taipei-based EVA Air has agreed to purchase three 777-300 extended range (ER) aeroplanes and has finalised the order with Boeing, which also includes options for the purchase of an additional four aircraft.

Commenting on the order, EVA Air president Chang Kuo-wei said that the 777-300ER was the flagship of its long-haul fleet and would play an important role in growing its global operations.

"The highly efficient, technologically advanced airplane will enhance the premium flying experience for passengers and will also allow us to open new destinations around the world," Kuo-wei said.

As part of a strategy to expand its long-haul fleet, the new aircraft will enable EVA Air to increase its frequency to mainland China and new destinations in North Asia, as well as establish itself as the preferred premium airline in Taiwan.

Apart from three 777-300ERs, the Taiwan-based carrier will also lease four 777-300ERs from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), adding a total of seven new 777-300ER to its existing long-haul twin-aisle fleet of 15 airplanes.

Powered by the General Electric GE90-115BL engine, producing 115,300lb of thrust, the lightweight Boeing 777-300ER reduces fuel consumption and produces 22% less carbon dioxide a seat and costs 20% less to operate for each seat, according to Boeing.

Capable of cruising at a speed of Mach 0.89 (590mph), the twin-engine 777-300ER has a maximum range of 14,685km and can accommodate up to 365 passengers in a three-class configuration.

Each wing of the 777-300ER is being extended by 6.5ft to enhance overall aerodynamic efficiency, while reducing takeoff field length and increasing mount performance.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes senior vice president of sales and customer support Ray Conner added that EVA Air was a launch customer for the 777-300ER in 2000.
