British Airways’ regional subsidiary BA CityFlyer has placed an order with Embraer for an additional E190 aircraft, which will be operated from the carrier’s main base at London City Airport (LCY).

The latest order will bring the total number of E-190s delivered or on order to nine.

In 2008, British Airways placed a firm order for six E-170 and five E-190 aircraft, along with three E-190 options for BA CityFlyer, and has later firmed the options The latest E 190 will be the 15th for BA CityFlyer’s all-Embraer E-Jet fleet of aircraft.

Embraer Commercial Aviation president and CEO Paulo Cesar Silva said: "This new acquisition demonstrates the proven ability of the E190 to allow operators to grow their route networks from restricted airports like London City."

BA CityFlyer’s E190 will feature 98 Elite seats and allow the airline to optimise capacity on routes that demand more frequency, while facilitate the development of new markets.

BA CityFlyer managing director Adam Carson said the Embraer 190 is a very versatile aircraft and well-suited to BA CityFlyer’s network ambitions.

The new firm order will be included in Embraer’s 2013 fourth quarter backlog.

Since starting revenue service in 2004, Embraer has secured more than 1,350 orders for its E-Jets, with more than 1,000 aircraft delivered.

The company’s E-Jets have been added to the aircraft fleets of 64 airlines.
