787 Dreamliner

Aerospace Composites Malaysia (ACM), a joint venture between Boeing and Hexcel, has invested MYR50m ($15.6m) to expand its facility by 40%, in order to support the increased production by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

ACM produces flight surfaces for Boeing’s commercial programmes, including the Next-Generation 737, 747-8, 767 and 777, as well as 787 Dreamliner.

The latest investment will add 125,000ft² to the factory space, which currently totals 440,000ft².

The project consists of a clean-room expansion of 11,000ft² and installation of new equipment worth MYR14m ($4.4m).

Boeing Commercial Airplanes materials and structures vice-president John Byrne said Boeing and Hexcel are increasing ACM’s capacity.

"Boeing and Malaysia have a long history of collaboration, and ACM is a great example of the mutual benefit earned by growing Malaysia’s high-tech sector and supporting Boeing’s supply chain," Byrne said.

"ACM expects to increase its manufacturing workforce."

With this additional capacity, ACM expects to increase its manufacturing workforce from the current 950 employees.

The additional capacity is also expected to be partially used to commence production of 787 Fixed Leading Edge Panels in 2014.

ACM general manager Robert Moray said: "ACM is determined to continue to grow ACM business by sourcing locally, creating new local employment especially within this Kubang Pasu district, offering products and helping in the further industrial development of the state of Kedah and the growth of the aerospace industry in Malaysia."

Aerospace Composites Malaysia, formerly Asian Composites Manufacturing, was formed in 1998 as a joint venture for composites fabrication and minor parts assembly.
