Rolls-Royce has successfully run the Trent XWB engine for the first time on a testbed in the UK.

The Trent XWB is specifically designed for the Airbus A350 XWB family of aircraft with a fuel-efficient and environmentally sensitive large engine design.

The engine can provide 28% better fuel efficiency than pre-Trent generation engines.

The first run marks the beginning of an extensive pre-flight programme. Flight tests will begin on an Airbus A380 testbed next year and an A350 XWB in 2012.

By early 2011, seven development engines will be running.
