General Dynamics C4 Systems will upgrade the ground segment for Nasa’s space network under a contract worth $642.2m.

The network will provide the resources for global space-to-ground telecommunications and tracking coverage for low Earth orbit and near-Earth robotic and human spaceflight missions.

Nasa’s tracking and data relay satellites (TDRS) form the corresponding space segment.

General Dynamics will modernise the ground segment to sustain high-quality services, meet stakeholder requirements, and reduce the required operations and maintenance resources.

Work includes replacing obsolete systems, and creating a more flexible and expandable architecture to integrate Nasa’s space communications and navigation networks.

The upgrade will also allow the implementation of new methods and capabilities for using the TDRS to support space network user spacecraft.
