The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has presented Neil Armstrong with its Global Aviation Leadership Award (GALA) for his contribution to the space programme.
IATA director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said that among pioneering people who have contributed to improving human existence by pushing back the boundaries of space, Neil Armstrong holds a very special place of honour.
“As a test pilot on over 200 models of aircraft and as the first man to walk on the moon, Armstrong has challenged the limits of speed and altitude,” he said.
After retiring from Nasa, the astronaut contributed to the next generation of aviators by teaching aerospace engineering.
Armstrong is the fourth recipient of the award established in 2002, which is given to outstanding individuals that have helped shape air transport.
