The EU and Latin America agreed to work together to find ways to strengthen cooperation in civil aviation in areas of safety and the environment when they met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 25 May.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the EU and the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission to develop a joint action plan for cooperation before the end of the year.
European Commission vice-president Siim Kallas said both regions hope that by working together they can improve aviation safety and reduce the environmental impact of flying.
A horizontal agreement on safety was signed during the meeting – this looks at modernising the legal framework for and establishing full legal certainty for all air carriers operating flights between Brazil and the EU.
The aviation safety agreement will also enhance safety in aeronautical products and services trade, reduce costs, and simplify administrative procedures for authorities and industries.
Both agreements are expected to be signed at the EU-Brazil Summit in Brasilia on 14 July.
