AeroVironment has completed the ground testing of the first Global Observer unmanned aerial vehicle in preparation for flight testing.
Ground tests included ground vibration, structural and taxi tests conducted by the US Department of Defence, Nasa and AeroVironment.
The firm is developing the UAS to provide robust, cost-effective and persistent communications and surveillance over any location.
Global Observer, developed under the Global Observer joint capability technology demonstration (JCTD) programme, is receiving over $120m from six US Government agencies.
Each aircraft in a Global Observer system can fly at an altitude between 55,000ft and 65,000ft for five to seven days and provide over 280,000 square miles of coverage.
Communications intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) payloads are currently being prepared for installation onto the aircraft once development flight tests are complete.
