China plans to establish its own independent satellite navigation system called Beidou.
The navigation system designer, Sun Jiadong, told the Xinhua news agengy that the system would cover the whole world by 2020 and was expected to become the most competitive navigation system on earth.
Currently in the second stage of its development, the project aims to build 35 satellites to cover China and the entire Asia-Pacific region by 2012.
The first stage of development consisted of launching three satellites that have been offering navigation services to China since 2000.
According to Sun Jiadong, the next ten years will be crucial for development and will include the third phase of development that will enable the system to offer services worldwide.
