Arianespace’s heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA launcher will launch the Intelsat 17 satellite into space, under a new contract with manufacturer Intelsat.
The launch vehicle will place the satellite into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) at the end of 2010 from the European spaceport in French Guiana.
Weighing 5,800kg at lift-off, Intelsat 17 will provide services across Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia from its orbital slot of 66°E.
Replacing the Intelsat 702 satellite, it will also expand Intelsat’s C-band video distribution community in the Indian Ocean region.
The Ariane 5 ECA, capable of carrying two telecommunications satellite payloads, is powered by a cryogenic core stage and two solid rocket boosters in the initial flight phase followed by a cryogenic upper stage for orbital injection.
