Lift-off for this year’s first Ariane 5 launch vehicle, which will carry the Astra 3B and the COMSATBw-2 satellites, is set for 26 March.
Astra 3B is a Ku and Ka-band spacecraft developed by Astrium for SES Astra for direct-to-home broadcast services and two-way broadband relay across Europe and the Middle East.
The heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA will carry a total payload of 9,115kg, including 7,970kg for the satellites and their associated hardware, and the SYLDA dual-payload dispenser system.
The commercial satellite will be placed at SES Astra’s important 23.5°E orbital position.
The launch vehicle will also carry COMSATBw-2, a secure relay platform for German armed forces.
Ariane 5 launches for 2010 have been delayed to enable certain additional verifications on the vehicle.
