Final negotiations on the third generation of meteorological satellites, the Meteosat third generation (MTG) are to take place between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Thales Alenia.
Meteosat has the capacity to view a large portion of Earth from a geostationary orbit 36,000km above the equator and can monitor rapidly evolving events for weather forecasting.
The MTG series will provide improvement over the current second-generation Meteosat satellites including increased computer power.
ESA and Thales will enter into negotiations following evaluation of proposals by the tender evaluation board (TEB).
The first MTG is expected to be launched in 2016.
