Thales Alenia Space had begun work on the Sentinel 1B and 3B earth observation satellites for the European Space Agency.

Sentinel 1B and 3B satellites are the duplicate models of the Sentinel 1A and 3A satellites currently under construction.

Sentinel 1B will map urban areas and environmental impacts, monitor land surface motion risks, sea-ice zones and forest and climate change, and survey marine environment and maritime security.

The satellite will image the earth in 250km-diameter sections, with a ground resolution between 5m and 25m.

Fitted with a C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) the satellite will provide continuous images, day and night, in all weather conditions and will be placed in the sun-synchronous near polar orbit.

Sentiniel 3B will conduct oceanography and land-vegetation monitoring missions with two optical payloads for ocean colour monitoring and measuring sea surface temperature, and a high-accuracy ocean altimeter.

The satellite, in a high-inclination, sun-synchronous polar orbit, will determine parameters such as sea surface topography, sea and land surface temperature, and ocean and land colour.

The satellites will be a part of ESA’s global monitoring for environment and security (GMES) programme, which has six Sentinel satellites.
