Aeromexico has retrofitted the first of the 36 Boeing 737 aircraft with Messier-Bugatti carbon brakes.
The 737-700 retrofit included the replacement of steel brakes for the first time on an in-service 737 aircraft.
The brakes are expected to reduce operation costs of the aircraft fleet due to the extended carbon brake life, lower cost-per-landing and weight savings of 600lb to 700lb per aircraft.
An Aeromexico spokesperson was quoted by Aviation Week as saying that the remaining planes will be modified at a rate of four per month.
The entire fleet is expected to go through the upgrade in around nine months.
