Viking Air has secured a qualification approval from Transport Canada for the Level ‘D’ full flight simulator of the Series 400 Twin Otter family of aircraft.

Through its sister company Pacific Sky Aviation, the approval has validated the Full Flight Simulator as an exact replica of Twin Otter Series 400 Type Design in terms of cockpit, avionics systems and flight behavior.

Using the Series 400 Twin Otter Full Flight Simulator, instructors can programme training events from any airport or GPS location, which helps customers to operate from remote locations or conduct special operations unique to the Twin Otter.

“This state-of-the-art training will not only enhance pilot proficiency and safety, but will also reduce the risk inherent with using actual aircraft for training.”

The digital simulation is also designed to safely recreate emergency situations, thereby allowing pilots to practice emergency procedures approved by the aircraft manufacturer without exposing personnel to larger risk.

The Series 400 Twin Otter Full Flight Simulator is also developed to offer seaplane training options using the Level ‘D’ capability and allow Twin Otter seaplane pilots to safely practice takeoffs and landings in various sea states, winds, and water conditions such as glassy water.

Seaplane configuration of the simulator is expected to be readied for training by next month.

Viking Air president and CEO David Curtis said: “The simulator’s leading-edge technology will allow them to provide training for customers with diverse requirements, including operation of both wheeled and seaplane configurations of the Series 400 Twin Otter.

“This state-of-the-art training will not only enhance pilot proficiency and safety, but will also reduce the risk inherent with using actual aircraft for training.”

Pacific Sky Aviation has so far concluded courses on the simulator for two undisclosed customers and is currently reserving simulator training slots for customers for the rest of year.
