Vertical Aerospace has partnered with Honeywell to use its fly by wire aircraft control systems for the planned electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Integrating Honeywell’s technology with Vertical Aerospace’s aircraft will enable both companies to make carbon-free, on-demand air mobility a reality by 2023.

Vertical Aerospace’s aircraft will be equipped with Honeywell’s latest flight systems for urban air mobility.

Systems set to be incorporated include triplex fly-by-wire computers, which provide the critical redundancy required to meet safety and certification requirements for eVTOL aircraft.

Honeywell’s high-performance systems are suited to the high-capability aircraft being developed by Vertical Aerospace.

Vertical Aerospace COO Michael Cervenka said: “This is the culmination of a thorough evaluation, during which we have been impressed with Honeywell’s product offering and technical capabilities.

“Equally important is the speed, agility and level of support they have provided. I very much look forward to progressing to the next phase on our exciting journey towards a fully certified aircraft.”

Last month, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to support the emerging urban air mobility segment.

The agreement will be integrated into a flying prototype next year.

Honeywell Aerospace electronic solutions president Carl Esposito said: “Rapid technology innovation is at the forefront of our surge in meeting the urban air mobility challenge.

“We’re excited to work with Vertical Aerospace on installing our new compact fly-by-wire system in their eVTOL platform, helping their air taxi meet all safety, maintenance and operating objectives from prototype testing through deployment.”
