Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in the US has completed the construction of its North / South runway.

The runway was resurfaced with new asphalt and widened to handle larger cargo and passenger jets. The lights on the runway were replaced.

During construction, aircraft was redirected to the East / West runway.

Airport manager Jim Szczesniak was quoted by KTVA as saying: “We are complete with all of our paving. We are in the process now of just basically finishing the final touches on it. So we anticipate that the runway will be opening relatively shortly.”

The airport has not received any upgrades or work for the past 15 years. The current upgrades are expected to last for the next 15 years.

Earlier this month, the airport released an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a public-private partnership to manage and operate its international terminal.

Ted Stevens International Airport, renamed in 2000 in honour of Alaska’s senior US Senator, serves Anchorage in Alaska, the northernmost state in the US. It is situated 12km south of the city.

Ted Stevens Airport is the gateway to Alaska’s largest city. Its location makes it an important transpacific crossroad for both commercial and cargo flights.

In November last year, Alaska Airlines commissioned its newest aircraft maintenance hangar and regional headquarters at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Constructed with an investment of $50m, the anchorage hangar covered 105,000ft². The facility can accommodate two Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft simultaneously.
