ADB Safegate’s Safedock advanced visual docking guidance system (A-VDGS) has been installed at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in the US to optimise gate performance.

Safedock A-VDGS, which was installed on a gate in Concourse D of the terminal building, also supports ramp safety. It will create a better gate operation at the airport during regular and irregular operating conditions.

Additionally, the Lee County Port Authority-operated airport has ordered for two more A-VDGS as part of a year-long testing to ascertain whether to expand the system across the airport.

“We were looking for technology that will help our operation run more safely and efficiently during all weather conditions.”

Lee County Port Authority executive director Jeff Mulder said: “With a record number of passengers flying through RSW, we were looking for technology that will help our operation run more safely and efficiently during all weather conditions. We look forward to having our airline partners and passengers benefit from this investment in the Safedock system.”

During lightning events, the airport faces a number of ramp closures. To solve this issue, the airport has deployed the Safedock A-VDGS, which offers active visual guidance that enables pilots to self-park aircraft.

Besides offering the fastest time to the gate, the automated system improves operations and recovery during lightning by safely guiding pilots and allowing travellers to disembark at the gate, even when ground staff is not permitted on the ramp.

RSW has become the fifth Florida airport to tap Safedock A-VDGS from ADB Safegate to improve performance during lightning events.

ADB Safegate Americas CEO Joe Pokoj said: “The Lee County Port Authority has been a long-time partner of ADB SAFEGATE on the airfield.

“We are excited to expand that partnership to include the gate area to help the county provide a safer, more efficient airport experience for their airlines and their passengers.”
