Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) has said that it will unveil its second expansion phase at Cityscape Qatar.

Cityscape Qatar will take place at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre from 22 to 24 October.

The convention’s international audience of real estate developers and investors will be able to view 3D mock-up designs of the project and the features of the plans.

The airport expects to increase its capacity to 53 million visitors per year by 2022, which will be a surge of 30% from current passenger traffic.

Hamad International Airport chief operating officer Badr Mohammed Al Meer said: “The second phase of our expansion is a testament to HIA’s growth in its relatively short time of operations.

“With the third quarter of this year being the busiest on record for the airport, HIA continues to grow and remain a preferred hub for travellers. Cityscape Qatar is the perfect platform for us to reveal our exciting plans, and we look forward to showcase what the expansion project has to offer.”

Under the expansion plans, an Airport City will be constructed.

This will offer future opportunities for investments, including an office and business complex, free trade zone, landscape area and hotels.

A new cargo terminal will also be built, which is expected to increase the airport’s cargo capacity to three million tonnes annually and tackle the expected freight traffic surge.

Construction will begin in the first quarter of next year. The airport noted that all contracts will be awarded by the end of 2019.
