Building work has started on Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport’s new CNY4.17bn ($653m) terminal in the city of Xiamen, China.

The expansion project includes a logistics centre, new parking aprons, a new runway and a garage.

The terminal will be completed in 2014 and will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 27 million from 13.2 million.

In 2013, Xiamen Airport Group will start the construction of Xiang’an Airport, which will have three 3,600m-long runways, accommodate over 200 jets and handle more than 30 million passengers per year.

The airport will open in 2019, according to xinhuanet.com.
