US airline Delta has suspended hundreds of flights at airports worldwide after suffering a major power outage yesterday.

Power was lost at the company's headquarters in Atlanta, which affected Delta computer systems and operations worldwide.

The airline had cancelled 450 flights following the outage, while nearly 1,700 flights had been dispatched.

"I appreciate the hard work the Delta team and the Delta people are doing to bring our system back up as quickly and safely as possible."

According to media reports, a technical problem in a piece of electrical equipment at one of its Atlanta facilities had led Delta systems to crash.

The airline said that systems are improving and flights are resuming, but delays and cancellations continue during the recovery efforts.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian apologised to customers for disruption to airline's operations in a video, saying: "We lost power about 2:30am this morning, which caused us to implement the ground stop that we put in place at 5.
