Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has sent a formal letter asking the European Commission (EC) to accelerate the signing of an agreement on the Common Aviation Area between Ukraine and the European Union (EU).

UIA is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Association of European Airlines (AEA).

The agreement will strengthen several improvements in aviation rules and standards in Ukraine as well as create further market opportunities and economic benefits on both sides.

"It will allow for gradually opening the respective aviation markets and expanding flight opportunities between Europe and Asia."

With the signing of the agreement, most of remaining limitations in air transportations can be removed between Ukraine and the EU, in addition to establishing a free and fair competition.

In addition, the agreement on Common Aviation Area will help the country realise its aviation potential, exploit transit opportunities.

The deal will also encourage the country’s carriers to raise operational safety, quality and service standards, facilitate the development of airlines and the consolidation of the sector, bring new opportunities for consumers.

The airline said in a statement: "Beyond that, liberalisation of air traffic between Ukraine and the East is of critical importance to the further development of our country`s transit potential.

"Therefore, UIA encourages the Commission to join the efforts of Ukrainian aviation authorities and help gain access to the overregulated eastern markets.

"It will allow for gradually opening the respective aviation markets and expanding flight opportunities between Europe and Asia."
