TAP Portugal has entered a contract with Airbus to become the first operator of the new A330neo aircraft, also becoming the launching carrier to fly the Airspace by Airbus cabin brand in the A330neo.

The flag carrier of Portugal expects to receive the new A330neo with the Airspace by Airbus cabin brand next year.

Last year, the airline placed an order for 14 A330-900neos to Airbus in a bid to renew its fleet.

TAP’s Airspace cabin will comprise a new welcome area, a new LED-based lighting system with 16.7 million possible colour variations, a larger overhead bins, new contemporary lavatories, and new-generation IFE and connectivity.

TAP Portugal chief commercial officer Trey Urbahn said: "Our passengers and flight-crews eagerly look forward to experiencing this innovative new cabin design.

"The carrier operates an all Airbus fleet with 61 aircraft currently in-service."

The carrier operates an all Airbus fleet with 61 aircraft currently in-service, including 43 A320 family and 18 widebody family aircraft, with two more A330s to enter service this June to support expansion of the company’s long haul operations.

TAP has also placed orders for the new generation of A320neo and A330neo family aircraft, which is equipped with new-generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and aerodynamic enhancements.

Airbus launched the A330-800neo and the A330-900neo in July 2014, with first deliveries scheduled to start at the end of next year.

Separately, the company had entered a deal with TAP Portugal to upgrade the cabins of the carrier’s A330s, A319s, A320s and A321 fleet.

As part of the upgrade, seven A330ceo and 41 A320ceo family aircraft will be retrofitted by Airbus Upgrade Services.
