Singapore’s Changi Airport Group (CAG) has awarded a $323m contract for the expansion works of the airport’s terminal 1 to Japan’s Takenaka Corporation.
The contract has been awarded to the company following a competitive tender and will involve the replacement of existing check-in counters and the installation of two new check-in rows to increase passenger handling capacity.
As a result of this expansion, five retail and dining outlets will be shut down in the second quarter of 2015.
CAG said in a statement that it chose Takenaka as it has a strong track record in the development of airports in Japan, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
The expansion project will also see the conversion of the T1 baggage handling system from semi-automated to fully automated. With automatic sortation capability, the airport will be able to implement self check-in and self bag-drop functions at T1 along with early check-in facilities at Jewel Changi Airport.
The airport is also looking to further increase the terminal’s baggage claim capacity by installing two additional arrival baggage claim carousels.

By GlobalDataBernama reported that while the infrastructural works related to the redevelopment of the baggage handling area will be undertaken by Takenaka, Vanderlande Industries will be responsible for the baggage handling system upgrade.
CAG’s executive vice-president, engineering and development Fong Kok Wai was quoted by The Strait Times as saying: "The expansion works for T1 will take place amid ongoing airport operations, making this project a challenging one."
He further added that the airport would work closely with Takenaka to minimise the effect of the expansion on passengers.
Work on the terminal will begin this month and is expected to complete in 2019.
