UK-based threat detection solutions provider Smiths Detection has received the European explosive detection systems (EDS) cabin baggage screening certification for its HI-SCAN 6040aTiX X-Ray system.
Smiths Detection is the first in the industry to have received the EDS certification for its checkpoint screening solution, which is capable of detecting explosives automatically.
Airports will be able to use the company's advanced baggage X-Ray technology to screen luggage, without requiring additional explosive trace detectors or dogs.
Smiths Detection Aviation global market director Cameron Mann said: “Regulators are looking to next-generation detection technology to handle ever-evolving threats and we are proud that they have recognised our ability to keep passengers safe.
“We’re continuously working to meet the highest industry standards with our security solutions, ensuring passengers can travel safely and securely, while also helping lighten the load for airport operators.”
The HI-SCAN 6040aTiX solution is expected to enhance airport security, speed-up the baggage inspection process, and boost throughput.

By GlobalDataAdditionally, the baggage screening solution can help airports reduce costs for administration and maintenance services, as they would no longer need to use threat image projection in order to review operator performance.
The Smiths Detection system allows airports to maintain high levels of operator performance as the complexity of X-ray images remain consistently the same, thereby facilitating threat detection.
The HI-SCAN 6040aTiX solution offers accurate detection performance and carries out complex analyses in real-time, without affecting normal checkpoint procedures.
