Smiths Detection has unveiled a dual-view X-ray inspection system for screening large cargo, pallets and freight items on both passenger and cargo planes.

Smiths Detection said that the HI-SCAN 145180-2is is capable of screening objects up to 57in x 71in (145cm x 180cm) and meets the maximum skid / pallet size allowed by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The system’s dual-view capability will accelerate the amount of cargo screened by providing the operator with two high-resolution adjoining images, reducing the need to scan twice to obtain the same data.

Smiths Detection president, Mal Maginnis, said: "A smooth flow of air cargo is critical to the global economy."

Maginnis added: "Our new, advanced X-ray inspection system will allow shippers to screen bulk items without the requirement of unpacking shipments, scanning individual boxes and then re-assembling the pallet or large shipment.

"The HI-SCAN 145180-2is, which also features a highly compact footprint, will save our customers both precious time and money."

The system is equipped with two 160 kV generators in a 90 degree opposition, which will provide a horizontal and vertical view of the object (dual view) for shortened inspection time and high quality images.

Its HI-MAT Plus technology feature will offer advanced material discrimination.
