Global IT provider SITA has been appointed by IGA to deploy its latest baggage tracking system at Istanbul New Airport in Turkey.

IGA is the contractor and designated operator of the new Turkish airport, which is slated to open for passengers next year.

The newly built airport will initially have the capacity to manage 90 million passengers each year.

The passenger capacity is estimated to reach more than 200 million passengers every year once all the four phases of the construction project at the airport are completed.

The Istanbul New Airport will be required to track more than 750,000 bags each hour once all the phases are complete.

SITA’s latest baggage tracking technology will be used to provide precise information about the location of every single bag on its route through the airport. This will significantly reduce the chances for the luggage to be mishandled.

The advanced solution will enable the carriers to track bags at major points in the journey, including check-in, transfer and arrival.

Airlines will also receive updates on the location of their baggage at each step of the journey, enabling them to comply with IATA Resolution 753.

SITA Middle East, India and Africa Airports vice-president Jihad Boueri said: “Baggage is one key area where technology is improving the passenger experience.

"SITA’s latest baggage tracking technology will be used to provide precise information about the location of every single bag on its route through the airport."

“Increasingly, airlines and airports are helping to relieve the anxiety of waiting for bags to arrive by providing real-time information on the status of their bags to passengers.

“At the same time, by understanding where a bag is at any point in its journey, airlines will be able to act proactively to ensure that a bag is correctly allocated to a flight, ensuring it arrives with the passenger at their destination.”

According to SITA’s Baggage Report 2017, the baggage management by airlines across the world improved in 2016 as the industry has been investing in technologies.

The report indicates that the rate of mishandled bags was 5.73 bags per thousand passengers in 2016, dropping from 12.25% in 2015, and was the lowest ever recorded.
