Singapore’s Changi Airport Group (CAG) has selected a joint venture formed by Samsung C&T Corp and Koh Brothers to develop a three-runway system for S$1.12bn.
The contract was awarded as a part of future expansion proposal that includes the development of Changi East and a future Terminal 5 in addition to transforming an existing third runway currently used by the military for joint civil-military purpose.

CAG intends to extend and connect the third runway to the existing two runways to handle commercial flights.
Under the terms of the agreement, the joint venture will carry out pavement and drainage works, security fencing, mechanical and electrical works, apart from other secondary works such as road diversions.
Additionally, the joint venture will undertake construction of canals and drainage systems to prevent the surface water from flooding the runway and taxiways.
Airfield specialised systems including airfield lighting, surveillance and detection systems will be installed at the airport, which currently has two runways under operations serving its three terminals along with the impending Terminal 4.

By GlobalDataCAGair hub and development executive vice president Yam KumWeng was quoted by Traveldailymedia.com as saying: "In addition to terminal capacity, airfield capacity is a critical determinant of an airport’s growth potential. A three-runway system is a crucial part of Changi Airport’s development plans.
"The extension of Runway 3, together with the new taxiway system linking to the existing Changi Airport, will total about 40 kilometres. A whole suite of supporting infrastructure and airfield systems will also be built to support three-runway operations.
The airport handled a traffic of nearly 4.96 million passengers in August this year, an increase of 6.6% when compared to the corresponding period of 2014.
More than 100 airlines operate at Changi Airport, totalling 6,600 weekly scheduled flights connecting Singapore to around 320 cities in about 80 countries and territories worldwide.
